Professor Armin Shavandi Announced as Keynote Speaker at ICBME 2026
Professor Armin Shavandi, Professor at the Faculty of Engineering at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Founder/Director of the BioMatter Lab, will join the ICBME 2026 conference as a keynote speaker. He will present on the topic: “Perfusion and Oxygenation Engineering in 3D Bioprinted Tissue Models for Controlled Delivery and Therapeutic Assessment.”
We are proud to announce that Professor Armin Shavandi, a distinguished researcher in the fields of biomaterials, tissue engineering, and biochemical engineering, will be a featured keynote speaker at ICBME 2026. Professor Shavandi’s research is widely recognized for its focus on valorizing biomass materials for high-value biomedical applications. Prior to joining ULB in 2018, he completed post-doctoral research fellowships at the University of Otago (New Zealand), in collaboration with Lincoln University and Deakin University.
Professor Shavandi earned his PhD in 2017 from the University of Otago, where his doctoral research centered on the development of bone scaffolds derived from marine shell waste. He also holds a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Putra Malaysia (UPM).
His keynote address, “Perfusion and Oxygenation Engineering in 3D Bioprinted Tissue Models for Controlled Delivery and Therapeutic Assessment,” addresses one of the most critical challenges in in vitro 3D models: the lack of precise control over transport, perfusion, and oxygenation. In this session, Professor Shavandi will introduce a novel strategy for designing living 3D systems with integrated perfusion capabilities and oxygen regulation. His presentation will cover the development of biocompatible bio-inks compatible with extrusion, digital light processing (DLP), and volumetric bioprinting; the fabrication of complex vascular networks and internal channels; and the design of oxygen-generating and oxygen-releasing systems to mitigate hypoxia in 3D tissue models.
